PPG (polypropylene glycol) refers to a group of polymers with the CAS number 25322-69-4 that are created when propylene glycol and ethylene oxide react.

The polymer (or macromolecule) of propylene glycol is called polypropylene glycol. It is a polyether chemically speaking, and it is more specifically a polyalkylene glycol (PAG) under H.S. Code 3907.2000.

Many polyurethane formulations contain PPG. With this material, waterborne polymer synthesis has been a characteristic. PPG is also used in the finishing of leather as a surfactant, wetting agent, and dispersion. In mass spectrometry and HPLC, PPG is also used as a calibration and reference standard. Defoamers may be utilized with PPG and its derivatives in drilling and other applications. Additionally, it serves as the main component in the production of paintballs. It has been tested for its ability to prevent corrosion.

Differences between PEGs and PPGs

Between PEGs and PPGs, there are three clear functional distinctions. Water solubility is the first factor, followed by fluidity and the sort of hydroxyl group that is present.

PEG polymers are soluble in water throughout a broad range of molecular weights, whereas the solubility of PPG in water drops sharply with increasing molecular weight. In actuality, PPG is soluble in water at a molecular weight of 425 but not at a weight of 550.PPGs don't form crystalline solids because of the methyl group, which also keeps them liquid at large molecular weights. PEG 600, however, has a melting point of 19°C.The existence of secondary hydroxyl groups in PPG, which are less reactive than the main hydroxyl groups in PEG, is another variation resulting from the methyl group.Last but not least, biotechnology firms frequently switch PEGs for PPGs as solvents in pharmaceutical applications because it is generally known that PPG is less harmful than PEG.
