Following BASF Monomers' announcement of its ambitious sustainability roadmap in February 2023, two of its production sites in Asia have now received ISCC+ certification. These certifications underscore the division's commitment to helping its global customers achieve their sustainability goals. This is the business unit's first ISCC+ certification in the Asia Pacific region, demonstrating its ability to offer Biomass Balancing (BMB) and Chemical Cycling (ChemCycling®) products with the same level of product performance as those now supplied from Korea, with lower CO2 emissions.
"As a bulk business at the heart of chemical production, we have a vast potential to be able to drive sustainable transformation for BASF and our various customer industries. These certifications demonstrate our deep commitment to driving sustainable growth in our customers' businesses. We will continue to provide them with the right solutions to adapt their portfolios to future needs," said Dr. Ramkumar Dhruva, President of BASF's Monomers business unit.
"This is an important milestone in our journey towards low product carbon footprint (PCF) manufacturing. Sustainability will be key to our success and BASF will take responsibility to actively lead the way," said Claudia Huang, senior vice president, Monomer Business Unit, Asia Pacific. The ISCC+ certified products will serve the base chemicals in many areas such as textiles, packaging, automotive, construction and appliances.
"We are very pleased that our Yeosu and Onsan sites have become the first plants in Korea to receive the ISCC+ certification. In addition, this is the first time that the entire value chain has been certified in the same country, allowing us to offer our customers adipic acid and polyamide 6.6 with a low product carbon footprint," said Dr. Dschun Song, Managing Director of BASF Korea Ltd. The Wonsan site now offers biomass-balanced and chemically recycled products and has successfully delivered its first customer order. More and more customers are willing to join the journey to achieve a low product carbon footprint and to collaborate in developing sustainable products.
Currently, BASF's biomass-balanced approach applied to adipic acid and PA 6.6 can reduce the product carbon footprint by at least 70%. The division will continue to develop lower product carbon footprint products in its product line and expects to achieve net CO2 emissions for adipic acid and PA 6.6 produced in Asia Pacific by the end of 2024 and 2027, respectively.
Along with the certification of the Winsan site, BASF received ISCC+ certification for its Lishui site, which is used for the production of TDI and MDI, an important intermediate for the production of adhesives and foams in many fields such as automotive, aerospace and furniture, while MDI is the basic raw material for the production of polyurethane, polyamide-imide, insulation foam and adhesives.
Currently, the Monomer Business Unit has a major base and more than 200 products certified by RedCert2 or ISCC+. The business unit plans to have additional certified sites in Asia in the coming years and will continue to expand its portfolio of certified biomass balancing products for customers in the region.
