Functions of polyvinylpyrrolidone

Polyvinylpyrrolidone (PVP) is a versatile ingredient that is used in cosmetics and beauty products as a binder, emulsion stabiliser, suspending agent and hair styling, mainly in mascara, eyeliner, conditioners, hairsprays, shampoos and other hair care products. It prevents the separation of water and oil in emulsions and binds the ingredients in compressed powders together. Polyvinylpyrrolidone also forms a dry film on the surface of the skin, nails and hair. When used as an ingredient in hair care products, it prevents hair from absorbing moisture to set the hair. It is also used in contact lens care solutions and as a thickening agent in whitening toothpastes and gels for whitening teeth.

Polyvinylpyrrolidone can be used as a clarifying agent for beer, wine and vinegar and as a preservative coating for citrus fruits.

Safety/side effects

Polyvinylpyrrolidone is considered to be a safe ingredient and is rated as a low risk ingredient. Although it has the potential to cause cancer, the International Agency for Research on Cancer considers it unlikely to be a human carcinogen. Polyvinylpyrrolidone is approved for use as a binder for tablets because it can pass through the body when taken orally and absorbed.
