NMP (N-methylpyrrolidone,N-Methyl-2-pyrrolidone) is soluble in water, ethanol, ether, acetone, ethyl acetate, chloroform and benzene, and can dissolve most organic and inorganic compounds, polar gases, natural and synthetic polymer compounds.NMP has the characteristics of low toxicity, high boiling point, high polarity, low viscosity, high solvency, non-corrosive, strong biodegradation ability, low volatility, chemical stability, excellent thermal stability. It is widely used in lithium battery, medicine, pesticide, pigment, cleaning agent, insulating material and other industries.

1. Rapid development of lithium battery industry drives the rapid development of NMP industry

In the production materials of lithium batteries, NMP plays a sufficiently important role: first, as a positive electrode coating solvent, to maintain a stable slurry within a certain viscosity range, the binder, positive electrode active substances, conductive agents and other substances required for various electrodes to be fused together, so that the binder is in full contact with the other substances; secondly, as a solvent for the conductive agent slurry of lithium batteries, as a slurry of the main liquid, with a very good wettability and fluidity.

2. The NMP competitive landscape has shifted from "domestic and foreign" to "production and recycling"

The industrial production of NMP is mainly synthesised by dehydration of γ-butyrolactone (GBL) and mono- or polymethylamine, while GBL, as a key intermediate, is mostly produced by dehydrogenation of 1,4-butanediol (BDO). Most of the domestic enterprises adopt catalyst-free synthesis method, and the products can be applied in the field of power battery. South Korea's Pear Tree Chemical can improve the purity of NMP to "four nines" through catalytic synthesis technology.

In addition, there is a recycling phenomenon in the NMP industry, and the mixing ratio of recycled materials and new materials is basically 8:2, which is mostly used in low-end fields. In recent years, domestic manufacturers have become increasingly mature technology, product quality effectively improve the competitive advantage of foreign producers in the country is gradually weakening. Domestic competition is mainly reflected in the direct manufacturers and recycling and purification manufacturers and a small number of import and export traders, recycling and purification manufacturers occupy scattered small and medium-sized customers and low-end market, while the direct manufacturer occupies the main large-scale customers and high-end market.

3. NMP supply still has a certain vacancy

According to incomplete statistics, by the end of 2022, China has a total of 650,000 tonnes/year of NMP production capacity, of which the recycling capacity reaches 135,000 tonnes/year. According to the current new production capacity plan, by 2025, the NMP production capacity will reach 815,000 tonnes/year. capacity will reach 815,000 tonnes/year, according to the previous NMP market demand forecast, the market gap of nearly 200,000 tonnes.
