What Are The Main Uses of Propylene Glycol?

Propylene glycol, also known by the IUPAC designation propane-1,2-diol, is a viscous, colorless liquid with a negligibly sweet flavor. In terms of chemistry, it is CH3CH(OH)CH2OH. It is categorized as a diol since it has two alcohol groups. Numerous solvents, including water, acetone, and chloroform, are miscible with it. Glycols have very low volatility and generally don't irritate.

Propylene glycol has many uses, and the following is a detailed introduction of some of the main uses of propylene glycol.

Polymers

The manufacturing of unsaturated polyester resins uses 45% of the propylene glycol produced as a chemical feedstock. In this manner, a copolymer is produced when unsaturated maleic anhydride and isophthalic acid are combined with propylene glycol. The production of thermoset plastics requires further crosslinking of this partly unsaturated polymer.

In connection with this use, propylene glycol and propylene oxide react to form oligomers and polymers that are utilized to make polyurethanes. In order to prolong the drying period of water-based acrylic architectural paints, propylene glycol is utilized. Because it evaporates more slowly than water, it prevents the surface from drying.

Food and drug

Several food goods, including coffee-based beverages, liquid sweeteners, ice cream, whipped dairy products, and soda, also employ propylene glycol. Propylene glycol is frequently included in vaporizers that are used to deliver medications or personal care items. It serves as a humectant in alcohol-based hand sanitizers to keep the skin from drying out.

Many medications, including oral, injectable, and topical preparations, employ propylene glycol as a solvent. Propylene glycol is used as a solvent and carrier for many medicinal medications that are insoluble in water; benzodiazepine tablets are one example. Many medicinal capsule formulations also employ propylene glycol as a solvent and carrier. Additionally, propylene glycol is a component of several fake tear compositions.

Antifreeze

When propylene glycol is combined with water, the freezing point of the latter is lowered. It serves as an anti-icing and de-icing fluid for airplanes. A 100% undiluted cold solution is used only on an aircraft's wings and tail surfaces in order to prevent ice accretion from forming during a specific time before takeoff (anti-icing), and a 50% water-diluted and heated solution is used to remove icing accretions from the fuselages of commercial aircraft on the ground (de-icing).

Typically, this window of opportunity is just 15 to 90 minutes long, depending on how much snow fell and how cold it was outside. RV, or marine antifreeze, is the name given to water-propylene glycol solutions that have been colored pink to show that they are largely harmless.

In low-toxicity, ecologically friendly vehicle antifreeze, propylene glycol is widely used as an alternative to ethylene glycol. Additionally, it is utilized to winterize the plumbing systems of abandoned buildings. Propylene glycol:water at a temperature of 60 °C is the eutectic composition. The commercial product, nevertheless, is water-rich and has a typical composition of 40:60 at 50 °F/45 °C.

Electronic cigarettes liquid

The major components of the e-liquid used in electronic cigarettes are propylene glycol, vegetable glycerin, or a combination of the two. They act as vehicles for chemicals like nicotine and flavorings and are aerosolized to mimic smoke.
