What Is Dipropylene Glycol?

Dipropylene glycol, also known as dipropanol, one-shrink dipropylene glycol, shrink dipropylene glycol, 4 oxygen-2,6-hexadiol, 1,1-oxygen-2-2-propanol, 2-hydroxypropyl ether, 2,2-dihydroxydipropyl ether, etc., or DPG Dipropylene glycol is an odorless, colorless, sweet, water-soluble, and hygroscopic liquid at room temperature. Solsoluble in water and toluene, it can be miscible in methanol and ether, and is spicy and sweet and non-corrosive. Little skin irritation and very low toxicity. In the case of an open fire, high heat is combustible. It can form an explosive mixture with the air. Suitable for flavors, spices, cosmetics, and other products sensitive to smell. The molecular formula is C6H14O3.

Main application

Dipropylene glycol finds many uses as a plasticizer, an intermediate in industrial chemical reactions, a polymerization initiator or monomer, and as a solvent. Its low toxicity and solvent properties make it an ideal additive for perfumes and skin and hair care products. It is also a common ingredient in commercial fog fluid, used in entertainment industry fog machines.

Dipropylene glycol is the ideal solvent for many flavors and cosmetics. This raw material has very good moisture, oil, and hydrocarbon co-dissolution abilities,  a slight smell, very little irritation to the skin, and very low toxicity. The isomers have a uniform distribution and excellent quality.

Dipropylene glycol can also be used as a coupling agent and moisturizer in a variety of different cosmetic applications. In the perfume field, the use of dipropylene glycol is greater than 50%. In some other applications, dipropylene glycol is generally used within 10% of its weight. Some specific product applications include: hair curl solution; skin cleaning solution (cold cream, shower gel, bath lotion, and skin care solution); deodorant; face, hand, and body skin care products; moisturizing skin care products; lip balm, etc.

Dipropylene glycol can also be used in the production of unsaturated resin and saturated resin. The resin produced by it has superior softness, crack resistance, and weather resistance. The product has long-term resistance to yellow degeneration.

Dipropylene glycol is also used as cellulose acetate, nitrocellulose, insect gum varnish, and a solvent for castor oil. It can also be used as a plasticizer, fumigant, synthetic detergent, etc.

Manufacturing method

prepared by the condensation of 1,2-propylene oxide in the presence of 85% sulfuric acid with 1,2-propylene glycol. The reaction solution was neutralized with sodium hydroxide solution, filtered, distilled under reduced pressure, and then distilled under atmospheric pressure to collect the 229–233 °C fraction as dipropylene glycol. When making propylene glycol by hydration of 1,2-propylene oxide, dipropylene glycol is a by-product.

Storage and transportation

Dipropylene glycol shall be packed in iron barrels and transported as general chemicals, stored in a cool and ventilated warehouse. Stay away from the fire and heat sources. Should be stored separately from the oxidant; avoid mixed storage and transportation. A corresponding variety and quantity of firefighting equipment shall be equipped. The storage area shall be equipped with leakage emergency treatment equipment and suitable shelter materials.
