Neopentyl Glycol (Neo or NPG) is a white crystalline chemical material, odourless, hygroscopic and used for selective separation of aromatic and cycloalkyl hydrocarbons.
NPG Neopentyl glycol has a wide range of applications, mainly as the production of unsaturated resins, polyester powder coatings, oil-free alkyd resins, printing inks, synthetic aviation lubricants, polyurethane foam plasticisers, synthetic plasticisers, surfactants, insulating materials, polymerisation blocking agents, oil additives and so on; In addition, it is also used in the pharmaceutical industry.
Neopentyl glycol preparation method
1、Sodium formate method. Isobutyraldehyde is condensed with formaldehyde at 30-35℃, pH 9-11, in the presence of alkali catalyst to produce hydroxy-tert-butyraldehyde, and excess formaldehyde is reduced to neopentyl glycol under the condition of strong alkali, and formaldehyde is oxidised, and sodium formate is produced by the action of alkali. The reaction solution is neutralised with formic acid, distilled and dehydrated under reduced pressure, and the concentrated solution is extracted by layered extraction to remove sodium formate, then cooled, crystallised and separated to obtain the finished product.
2、Hydrogenation method. By isobutyraldehyde and formaldehyde condensation, get hydroxyneopentanal, and then by hydrogenation reduction and obtained.
