How To Use Adipic Acid Safely?

Adipic acid (adipic acid), also known as comeric acid, is an important organic binary acid with the structure of HOOC (CH2) 4COOH. It can produce a salt reaction, an esterification reaction, an amidation reaction, etc., and can condense with binary amine or binary alcohol into a high polymer. Adipic acid is a binary carboxylic acid of great industrial significance. It plays an important role in chemical production, the organic synthesis industry, medicine, lubricant manufacturing, and other aspects, and its output ranks second among all binary carboxylic acids.

Chemical property

The functional group of adipic acid is a carboxyl group, so it will have the properties of a carboxyl group, such as salt formation reactions, esterification reactions, amidation reactions, etc. At the same time, as a binary carboxylic acid, it can also condense with binary amines or binary alcohols into a high polymer. Apic acid is the typical acid, with a pKa between 4.41 and 5.41. Adipic acid can react into salt with general alkaline substances, showing acidity, and can also undergo esterification reactions with alcohol under certain conditions. The carboxyl group in adipic acid can also aminate with the amino group. As a binary carboxylic acid, it can condense with binary amines or diols into polymers.

Environment and health

Adipic acid has a stimulating effect on the eyes, skin, mucous membrane, and upper respiratory tract. This substance is harmful to the environment and can cause pollution to the water body and the atmosphere, and organic acids are easy to form acid rain in the changes of atmospheric chemistry and atmospheric physics. Therefore, when the PH value drops below 5, it will cause serious harm to animals and plants, and the reproduction and development of fish will be seriously affected. The metals in the soil and water sediment in the basin can be dissolved into the water to poison fish. The acidification of water will also lead to changes in the composition and structure of aquatic organisms, the increase of acid-resistant algae and fungi, the decrease of root plants, bacteria, and vertebrates, and the decomposition rate of organic matter. Acidification can seriously lead to fish loss or death in lakes or rivers.

Preventive measure

Operators must be specially trained and strictly follow the operating procedures. Factory operators must wear self-suction filter dust masks, poison-proof penetration work clothes, labor protection shoes, rubber gloves, and filter gas masks when necessary. Smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Use an explosion-proof ventilation system and equipment. Avoid dust production. When handling, use light loading and unloading to prevent damage to packaging and containers. And note that the empty container may contain harmful substances.

Storage and transportation

Adipic acid should be stored in a cool, ventilated, and rain-proof warehouse. Stay away from the fire and heat sources. Should be stored separately with oxidant, reducing agent, and alkali, and avoid mixed storage. Equipped with the corresponding variety and quantity of firefighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment. The storage area shall be equipped with suitable material for leakage. The packaging should be complete, and the loading should be safe. During the transportation process, make sure that the container does not leak, collapse, fall, or be damaged. It is strictly prohibited to mix and transport oxidants, reducing agents, alkalis, and edible chemicals. Transportation should be exposed to rain and high temperatures. The vehicle shall be thoroughly cleaned after transportation.
